Planning your Garden and Composting

There’s something quietly exciting about this time of year—the soil is waking up, the days are stretching a little longer, and the promise of a garden is just beginning to take shape. It’s the perfect moment to start dreaming, planning, and yes… even getting your hands a little dirty.

With a bit of guidance from our very own Master Gardener, Doris Kent, that dream garden becomes a lot more doable—and a lot more fun.

Doris always says a garden doesn’t start with plants—it starts with a plan. Picture where your tomatoes will soak up the sun, where your flowers will add a splash of colour, and where you might tuck in a few herbs just steps from your kitchen door. It’s a bit like painting a picture, only this one grows and changes every day.

And then there’s composting—often thought of as the “mystery pile” in the corner of the yard. But Doris has a way of making it feel like magic. Kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, and fallen leaves transform into rich, dark soil that your garden will love. It’s not just practical—it’s deeply satisfying. You’re turning what would be waste into something full of life.

The best part? You don’t have to get everything perfect. Gardens are wonderfully forgiving. Some things will thrive, others might surprise you, and every season teaches you something new.

So as spring settles in, grab a notebook, start sketching out your ideas, and maybe set aside a little space for that future compost pile. With Doris Kent sharing her wisdom along the way, you’ll find that gardening isn’t just about growing plants—it’s about growing a sense of joy, curiosity, and connection to the world right outside your door.

And really, what could be better than that? 🌱
