State of the World, starts up again on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 in the Melmoth Lounge.
State of the World (previously International Discussion)
Last year, our “International Discussion” group set out with a plan… and then happily ignored it. What started as a conversation about democracy—how it begins and how it can slip away—quickly turned into something much more fun. One week we were looking at different forms of government (with a stop in Germany, Portugal and the Philippines), and the next we were deep into whatever headline caught our attention that day.
We covered everything from Alberta legislation to big global questions like hard power vs. soft power, the International Criminal Court in The Hague, and who actually has the biggest military. At times, we even tried to untangle topics like the relationship between the United States and Iran… no small task! Our most reliable guest each week? “Mr. Google.” With a quick search or two, we found ourselves constantly learning something new—and often heading off on wonderfully unexpected tangents. And that’s exactly the point with this group.
We’re back again this year with a new name: State of the World.
No fixed agenda. No homework. Just good conversation, curiosity, and a shared interest in what’s happening around us. Intelligent conversation – laid back but interesting. Not too intimidating. If you enjoy asking questions, exploring ideas, and maybe going down the occasional rabbit hole, we’d love to have you join us. We can’t promise where the conversation will go… but we can promise it won’t be boring!
