TECH CLASSES WITH STRONG COFFEE MARKETING

How long has it been since you were in a class room?  Who hasn’t spent time figuring out their phones, social media, and trying to determine whether one is being scammed?  Well this month, some of us took the opportunity to return to “school” and take the 2 Tech workshops hosted by our friends at Strong Coffee Marketing.

Day 1 – Learning Some Phone Basics

The first class, “Phone Basics” took place on March 1st and it was fantastic.  Brian Siddle from Strong Coffee walked us through basic things like controlling the ringer, the in-phone flashlight, adding our favorite contacts and their information.  Next up he shared some best practices when we are taking photos with our phone.  We took a quick break to enjoy some refreshments and then the second part of the class was the “fun” stuff.

QR codes seem to be everywhere these days so it was really helpful to learn some general information about QR codes, how to scan one and what to be aware of.  We finished off the first class learning video calling and then thankfully, we had some time for lots of questions!

Day 1 – Google Search, Maps, and Other Popular Apps

The second class took place later that afternoon and many of us returned to learn some more.  This time is was all about Google and Apps!  Lots of us had a good understanding of being online but Brian did a bit of a deep dive into things like how to navigate Google Maps, Apps vs. websites and iCloud, Air tags, and other popular tools for us Apple users.  We wrapped up the class learn about the online giant Amazon, how to shop safely and pay online.

Day 2 – Social Media Basics

Day 2 was on March 15th, giving us lots of time in between classes to practice what we learned before the second class.  There was lots of laughter and learning as Brian returned to our centre to teach us lots about Social Media.

We learned how to navigate Facebook and Instagram (did you know they are both owned and run by Facebook!), how to create our own posts and how to see the difference between regular posts and posts that are actually advertising.  Next up he walked us through youtube and the best part…how to be safe on Social Media.

Day 2 – Online Safety and Recognizing Fake Information

Our afternoon class was just so informative!  Brian is an excellent instructor with lots of experience so it made the class very interesting.  This class was all about learning how to be safe online and was this writer’s favorite class.  He gave us some good practical tips on how to spot real posts from fake posts, which is so important these days as we hear more and more about fake news! We also learned how we can flag fake news and information when we spot it!

The second half of the class was learning about common scams and security issues, creating strong passwords and what to do if we are a victim of a scam.

All in all, it was a fabulous 2 days of learning.  The Seba Seniors Board would like to thank the Westend Seniors Activity Centre for connecting us with Strong Coffee Marketing for this tech series.  Many of you don’t know this, but it was WSAC and Strong Coffee that build our fabulous website!
