THE CREATIVE DISPLAYS OF DIANE LUCAS

For many of us who visit our Thrift Shop here in Seba Beach, we are often in awe of the wonderful monthly displays that greet us as we walk into the thrift shop!  These displays are the creation of the creative eye of Thrift Shop volunteer Diane Lucas.

Diane does a remarkable job, combining color, texture, and a curated selection of objet d’art from the archives of the Thrift Store. In case you’ve missed them, here are the displays from the last few years.

If you are looking for some fun items during special events or holidays throughout the year, make sure to visit our thrift shop to see the fun items Diane has put together!

“IT’S ONE OF THE THINGS I LOVE ABOUT VOLUNTEERING!”

We recently met up with Diane to talk to her about the displays.  Here is what she had to say:

How long have you been doing the displays in the thrift store?
About 3 years. I started with the Christmas display. After that Diane Coulthard who does our media displays, and who did the seasonal displays asked if I would take on the rest of the seasonal displays. When I was in my 20’s I applied for jobs doing Window Displays in store windows. Since I had no training or experience I of course did not get the jobs. The family joke is that I finally made it in my first career choice!

How often do you change the displays?
Probably about once a month. Whenever there is a special occasion or new season coming up. I try to do something fun for events like St Patrick’s Day, Mother’s Day. Remembrance Day, Halloween, Christmas, etc.

How do you determine what goes into your displays.
I collect things throughout the year as people drop off donations and then when I am putting the display together I will go through the shop for things that might be suitable like sweaters for the fall display or green clothes that will go with St Patrick’s Day. I want to show off the special occasion as well as place things that people will want to buy for their own special occasions or seasons.

How long does it take to put a display together?
Usually half a day.

You have done a lot of fun displays.  What was your favorite?  If you don’t have a favorite, what time of year do you enjoy doing the most?
I really enjoy doing them all. Other volunteers will often bring things they think will be good in the display, so it often becomes a team effort. I am always happy when things fly off the display. It means I have chosen things that our customers like. That is really gratifying!
