SENIORFRAUDALERT.CA

Did you know that there is a website dedicated to educating older adults about scams?  Created by the Alberta Seniors Alliance, this website features:

  • 36 videos that explain the most popular scams.
  • the latest bulletins from the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre that advise the public about scams that are currently trending
  • guest blog posts from the Alberta Securities Commission featuring the latest investment scams, and tips to increase our financial literacy

3 Steps on how you can Spot & Stop The Scam!

Pick a day each month, grab a coffee, and spend 30 minutes staying up to date:

  1. Watch 3 videos from the Course
  2. Read the LATEST NEWS
  3. Discuss what you learned with a friend or family member and share the website

Why this works:

  • This simple, regular habit:
keeps scam tactics fresh in your mind,
  • builds a quick mental checklist of red flags, and
  • makes it more likely you’ll pause and ask “could this be a scam?” before responding

The goal is to help you stay informed and safer without taking much time.

The YEG Seniors Alliance

The YEG Seniors Alliance was created because of a passionate desire among a few senior-serving agencies in Edmonton to increase their capacity, impact. and reach, allowing them to be stronger together.

Edmonton Seniors Centre (ESC), Westend Seniors Activity Centre (WSAC), and the ICAN Seniors Association worked together on grants, projects, and initiatives; sharing employees, reducing costs, and building trusting relationships with each other, the business community, and seniors.

Identifying the problem

YEG Seniors Alliance Social Workers noticed seniors repeatedly being the victims of internet and phone fraud, even after being educated on scams.

After speaking with seniors who had experienced being defrauded on multiple occasions, it became clear that the current fraud prevention resources were ineffective for seniors.

100+ Seniors Helped Create The Website

Seniors needed a different approach to fraud prevention education. In order to be effective, it needed to be:

  • Written in plain language that was free of jargon and technical terms and could be easily translated to multiple languages
  • In small educational modules that provided simple but effective solutions
  • Positive and empowering rather than negative and fear-inducing

Senior-driven focus groups read and gave feedback on every scam, script, and quiz. The result is a senior-focused site that is written by seniors, for seniors.
