ORANGE SHIRT DAY BLANKET CEREMONY
On Saturday, September 28, 2024, Seba Seniors continued our tradition of recognizing Orange Shirt Day. This year was particularly special as Dennis Paul, knowledge-keeper, leader, and ceremonialist in his community was recognized for his contributions through a blanket ceremony.
DANCING CEREMONY & COOKOUT
Following the Blanket Ceremony there was dancing by Dennis Paul’s grandchildren in full regalia. The dancer’s ages ranged from 3 to 18 years old and their regalia and dancing was beautiful. During the performances, Dennis shared information about what the dances represented and it was quite interesting to learn about the history behind the dancing.
We later joined hands and participated in a group dance and then ended our event with an outdoor fire where we enjoyed hot dogs and bannock cooked on a stick.
A RESOLUTION & OUR FUTURE
Every year, on September 30, we recognize Truth and Reconciliation Day, also known as Orange Shirt Day. This year, we’ve made it an official event and are proud to have nominated Dennis Paul, a local advocate, for an Okimaw Award for his efforts to promote reconciliation. (https://www.okimaw.org)
